In all honesty, our family is an absolute nightmare to photograph. Two kids who never stand still, an angsty teenage boy who despises the camera, a melodramatic teenage girl who adores it and four dogs, provided us with a definite lack of family group photos over the years. So I was definitely apprehensive when my mum said we were having a family photoshoot for my grandparents’ birthdays.
We’d pre-warned Kirsten about our family’s spotty history when it came to family photos, and so she came into our house filled with ideas and cheer and managed to make all of us at ease in five minutes tops. She even indulged our own ‘plans’ for photos, and our dreams to include various stuffed toys and pets in the photos. With all the fun involved, I wasn’t expecting us to get many photos. I was very much wrong. Kirsten took the most gorgeous photos of our whole family; my grandparents LOVED them and, even I, the melodramatic teenager, was thrilled.

My beautiful mum recently celebrated her 80th birthday and Kirsten was there to document it. I had briefed Kirsten that her brother, who she had not seen for 27 years was a surprise guest, and that capturing that moment was critical. Words can’t express how amazing that set of images are, as mum first lays eyes on him and then moves towards him, tears in her eyes. They are absolutely priceless. Having Kirsten at this event was effortless. She managed to photograph every special person in mum’s life, in every possible combination - all my aunts and uncles, together for the first time in decades, alongside her children (including my brother who flew back from Canada), our crazy cousins, kids and neighbours. She chatted with guests, interacted with the kids (getting genuine smiles, even from the teenagers) and was a delight to have there. Kirsten then designed and managed printing of an album for mum that is a beloved record of her celebrations.

We had family photos taken for my dad’s 70th which involved 8 adults, and 6 grandchildren from 9 years and under. Kirsten took control the second she walked in the door and within 15 minutes she had taken the kids off on their own and snapped them looking their cutest, and just being very natural hanging with their cousins. She really captured their true character and all the mum’s were especially pleased. The pictures of the full group were also very natural and fun, and now have pride of place on our walls at home. The whole session seemed very relaxed and the photos are a testament to Kirsten’s photography skills, and her easy going nature. We would definitely recommend Kirsten for your family pics, and will no doubt book her again in a few years for the next family event.

Kirsten took the most amazing portraits of our extended family. She entertained the misbehaving children until they were eating out of her hand, which narrowly avoided the adults reaching the end of their tether, and got us all looking at the camera smiling beautifully – and at the same time!
